We know that Harry Redknapp is no angel and that he hasn’t won the biggest trophies but – I have to say that I am quite surprised by his firing today.
The man did lead Tottenham Hotspur to fourth in the Best League in the World after all. That’s no small feat. Yes – we know that Spurs lost their Champions League spot because Chelsea won the Champions League Final last month. But – come on – if you were a club like Tottenham surely you’d be happy to have fourth spot in the league to build on year after year.
Must be about something else.
That’s what Harry says himself – that the firing is about something else:
“When people at the top don’t like you, what can you do about it? I have to respect it. I can’t do anything about that.”
So it was about something other than winning – about some powerful people “not liking” Harry. Curious.
Harry thinks he won enough, given the circumstances:
“People read all these different things into how our season ended, but I know the reality. When you end up with two free transfers playing centre half, as we did at times, that is going to have an impact.”
Sounds like a swipe at the club’s transfer policy. Sounds fair enough to me.
But I do wonder if maybe the reason could have to do with how poorly the team started playing after the rumours started that Harry would take the England job after Capello was fired? I wonder if it was that?
Guess we’ll hear more about this as time goes on.
